Think of it as buying me a cup of tea while I keep the lanterns glowing here in Amberlight Valley. Thank you for supporting my stories and this little corner of magic.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve never just read a book… I’ve entered it.

The difference, I think, is ritual.

There’s a quiet magic that happens when you treat reading as more than something to do while waiting in line or scrolling before bed. When you give it time, space, and intention, it transforms into a doorway… one that asks you to slow down, to breathe, and to let yourself be carried away.

Of course, not every day allows for candles and playlists and cozy corners. Sometimes life is too busy, too full, or too messy. But whenever I can, I do my best to dive into a book in this way — to make it feel less like a quick distraction and more like a small ceremony of presence.

That’s what I call the ritual of reading. And it’s something you can create for yourself, no matter what season you’re in.

Step 1: Set the Atmosphere

Every ritual begins with atmosphere — a soft shift that tells your body and mind: we’re somewhere different now.

Sometimes I’ll light a candle, flip on a string of faerie lights, or turn on my aurora color-changing lamp until my room feels like a sky full of northern lights. Other times I’ll cue up an aesthetic video on YouTube… maybe a rainy library scene, or a seasonal aesthetic that matches the vibe of the book I’m about to dive into.

And if I’m not in the mood for background noise, I’ll mute the video and let one of my playlists or some lo-fi music set the tone instead.

Step 2: Choose Your Companion Objects

Objects hold memory and comfort, and bringing them into your reading ritual makes the moment feel like home.

  • Sometimes it’s a tumbler full of ice water or iced tea while I swing on the porch with my dog beside me.

  • Other times, it’s surrounding myself with fluffy pillows, Squishmallows, a blanket piled high, and a warm cuppa joe.

  • And almost always, there’s a pen or quill nearby because I can’t resist scribbling down a line that feels like starlight on the page.

Step 3: Create Time & Threshold

Rituals need thresholds, a signal that you’ve stepped from one world into another.

  • A porch swing in the sunshine with my dog at my feet.

  • The glow of an aurora lamp filling my bedroom.

  • The act of making tea or pouring something hot/cold before I settle in.

These little doorways remind me that I’m not just reading… I’m crossing into another world.

Step 4: Make It Belong to the Story

The most magical part of a reading ritual is letting it mirror the book itself. When your surroundings echo the story, the atmosphere becomes part of the memory you carry with you.

Here are a few simple ways you could bring each Amberlight Valley book to life:

  • The Christmas Witch → Try curling up beneath twinkle lights or lighting a pine-scented candle. Make yourself a mug of hot cocoa (the more marshmallows, the better) and put on soft holiday music or a cozy winter ambience video. Let the glow and warmth make you feel as if Brigid and Morgan could walk in at any moment.

  • Lost in Time → Keep a small hourglass, clock, or pocket watch nearby as you read… a symbolic reminder of the story’s heartbeat. Pair it with quiet lo-fi or instrumental music, or even silence if that helps you feel suspended in time. You might also keep a journal nearby to jot down thoughts, as if you’re mapping your own timeline alongside the characters.

  • The Secrets of Starlight Lake → Brew a calming tea (I love Butterfly Pea Flower Tea), then play gentle water sounds or a lakeside ambience video in the background. Add soft lighting — a candle, fairy lights, or even a lamp set to blue-green tones — to mimic the shimmer of the lake. Let yourself imagine stars glowing across the water as you turn the pages.

None of this has to be elaborate. Even one small detail: a scent, a sound, a warm drink, can tie your ritual to the story. And when you revisit the book later, those sensory anchors will come rushing back, making it feel like stepping into Amberlight Valley all over again.

Stories aren’t just meant to be read. They’re meant to be experienced.

When you turn reading into a ritual, you give yourself the gift of presence, belonging, and a doorway to magic in the ordinary. I’d love to know… which of these rituals will you try first? Or do you have a reading ritual of your own that makes books feel like home? Share it with me! Your ideas might just inspire the next reader who finds their way to the Valley.

So the next time you reach for a book, whether it’s one of mine or one waiting patiently on your shelf… pause. Light the candle. Pour the tea. Turn on the aurora lamp or head out to the porch swing.

Because every story deserves a little ceremony.

With ink and starlight,
Dalea
